Biography of John Lamb

John Lamb (1922-1991) was James Watt Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University from 1961 until 1991. He was a Vice Principal from 1977 to 1980.

Born in Accrington, Lamb studied Engineering at the University of Manchester, graduating BSc, MSc, PhD and DSc. After working for the Ministry of Supply during the Second World War, he became a lecturer in Electrical Engineering at Imperial College, London, where he was appointed Assistant Director of the department in 1958. He came to Glasgow with a strong reputation for his research in rheometry and his investigations into the properties of semiconductors.

Lamb was President of the British Society of Rheology (1970-1972) and Scientific Adviser to the Scottish Office Industry Department. He was appointed CBE in 1986.
