Wai Tsen Wang graduated with a Bachelors of Science (BSc) on 16 November 1912. He was born in Soochow (Suzhou), Jiangsu Province, to Tong Ung, an author and journalist.

Wang first matriculated in 1908-09, aged 22, joining the Faculty of Science. During his fours years he signed up for classes and advanced classes in Mathematics, Natural Philosophy (Physics), Physical Laboratory, Engineering (laboratory and drawing), Mining and Electrical Engineering. He was awarded prizes for Engineering Laboratory (4th place in the 1908-09 class) and a second class certificate for Geology (1910-11).
