Bill Marshall
William Thomas (known as Bill) Marshall (1907-1975) was Regius Professor of Civil Engineering at the University, 1952 to 1975. He was Director of the Engineering Laboratories; Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 1961 to 1964 and Senate Assessor, as well as Vice-President of the Cricket Club.
Marshall was a graduate of the Imperial College of Science and worked as a civil engineer for British Reinforced Concrete and FA Macdonald & Partners before returning to Imperial College as a lecturer in Civil Engineering in 1936. He was appointed Professor of Engineering at the University of St Andrews in 1946. He conducted pioneering research into reinforced concrete and his publications included Fundamental Principles of Reinforced Concrete Design (1951) and Solutions to Problems in Structures (1958).
