Biography of Gilbert Cook

Gilbert Cook (1885-1951) was Regius Professor of Civil Engineering from 1936 until 1951.

A graduate of the University of Manchester, Cook worked as an assistant engineer for the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Co from 1906 until his return to Manchester as Vulcan Research Fellow. He served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery, 1914 to 1917 and in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, before returning once more to Manchester in 1919 as Senior Lecturer in Engineering. He was Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of London, King's College, from 1921 until his appointment to the Chair at Glasgow.

Cook's primary research interests lay in the behaviour of steel under stress. He was President of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland from 1949 to 1951.
