Biography of Joseph Henri Napoleon Felix Savy
Joseph Henri Napoléon Félix Savy graduated MB ChB from the University in 1910 and MD in 1930, and became a pioneer in pneumothorax (collapsed lung) treatment in Scotland.
He was born at Port Victoria, Mahe, Seychelles, son of Charles, and attorney, and brother of Louis France Marcel Savy, BSc 1908.
Like his brother he was educated at Saint Louis de Gonzague’ College, Mahé and left the Seychelles for further study in the UK. From St Joseph’s College, Dumfries, Savy enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1905, and in that year was awarded a second class certificate for Zoology. Savy graduated MB ChB on 18 April 1910, and continued on study for his doctorate. His thesis on Tuberculin in diagnosis was accepted in 1916, but he did not graduate MD until 19 April 1930.
He served as a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War, specialising in the treatment of tuberculosis.
After having researched in Switzerland and worked in sanatoriums in England, Savy moved to Kingussie, Inverness-shire, where he bought the Grampian Sanatorium, which was the first private sanatorium in the UK for the treatment of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (now St Vincent's Hospital for the elderly). He became a pioneer in pneumothorax (collapsed lung) treatment in Scotland, and was one of the founder members, along with Sir Robert Philip, of the Tuberculosis Society of Scotland.
He died on 15 January 1965 at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Bournemouth, aged 79.
