Biography of William James Hamilton
William James Hamilton (1903-1975) was Regius Professor of Anatomy at the University from 1945 to 1948.
Born in County Antrim, Hamilton was a distinguished graduate of Queen's University, Belfast. In 1931 he came to Glasgow to pursue research for his MSc in the Anatomical Department, became a lecturer in Anatomy there and was awarded the Struthers Anatomical Prize and the University Gold Medal. He was awarded a DSc by the University in 1934.
Hamilton joined the staff of St Thomas's Hospital Medical School and in 1936 became Professor of Anatomy in the University of London at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College. He returned to Glasgow in 1946 as Regius Professor but departed for London just over two years later, leaving the department "cleaner, somewhat more modern, better equipped, and mayhaps the occupants a little shaken" according to a correspondent in the College Courant. He became Professor of Anatomy at Charing Cross Medical School and was Dean of the School from 1956 to 1962.
