William Leishman
William Leishman (1834-1894) was a graduate of the University and Regius Professor of Midwifery from 1868 until 1894. He was a Senate's Assessor from 1889 to 1893.
Leishman was the son of Matthew (1821-1874), the minister of Govan Old Parish Church, and the father of Sir William Boog Leishman (1865-1926), the eminent pathologist. He studied at the University, graduating MD in 1855. In 1863 he was appointed Professor of Medical Jurisprudence at Anderson's College where he began to specialise in Obstetrics, and in 1868 he was appointed to the Chair of Midwifery at the University.
Leishman took charge of a specialist ward for women's diseases at the Glasgow Western Infirmary in 1877 and had obstetrics beds at the Glasgow Maternity Hospital. His System of Midwifery (1870) became a standard text book.
