George Howe

George William Osborn Howe (1875-1960) was the first James Watt Professor of Electrical Engineering, from 1921 to 1946. He was awarded an LLD in 1947.

Born in Kent, Howe graduated DSc from the University of Durham and worked as an electrical engineer with Siemens in London and in Berlin. He became a lecturer at Hull Technical College in 1903 and in 1905 went to Imperial College, London as a lecturer and then Assistant-Professor of Electrical Engineering. He was head of the Department of Electrical Standards and Measurements at the National Physical Laboratory from 1920 until his appointment to the Chair at Glasgow the following year.

Howe is said to have contributed more than 300 papers to academic journals and learned societies. He was editor of the Radio Review and of The Wireless Engineer.
