George Pryde Scotland

Biography of George Pryde

George Smith Pryde (1899-1961) was Professor of Scottish History and Literature, 1957 to 1961. He was a secretary and a president of the College Club.

Born in Dundee, Pryde studied at the University of St Andrews and graduated MA (1922) and PhD (1926). He was a Commonwealth Fund Fellow at Yale University, 1926 to 1927 before coming to Glasgow as an assistant in Scottish History. He was appointed a lecturer in 1929, Senior Lecturer in 1947 and Reader in 1953. An authority on the history of the Scots burgh, Pryde was appointed President of the Historical Association of Scotland and Chairman of Council of the Scottish History Society in 1959.

Pryde served with the 4/5 Black Watch from 1918 to 1919 and with the Ministry of War Transport during the Second World War.
