Biography of William Macneile Dixon

William Macneile Dixon (1866-1946) was Regius Professor of English Language and Literature at the University from 1904 until 1935. He was awarded an LLD in 1936 and delivered the Gifford Lectures at Glasgow, 1935-1937.

Born in India, Gifford studied at Trinity College, Dublin and became Professor of English Literature in Alexandra College, Dublin, in 1891. He was Professor of English Literature in the University of Birmingham from 1894 until his appointment to the Regius Chair at Glasgow in 1904.

Dixon published popular and academic works of poetry, history, literary criticism and philosophy, and was one of the best-known British authors of his day.
