William Glen Liston's First Matriculation

William Glen Liston was born on the 30th July 1873 in Secundarabad, India where his father, William Alexander, was an Army Chaplain. He was educated at George Watson’s College, Edinburgh and at Albany Academy, Glasgow, before coming to the University of Glasgow to study medicine.

William first matriculated in 1890-91, aged just 17, and studied Latin and Greek, before changing to medicine in 1893-94 aged 20. Studying subjects such as Anatomy, Surgery, Materia Medica and Pathology, he was an outstanding student and was frequently second or third in his class. He achieved a total of ten First Class Certificates and won a Special Prize for Drawings of Class Specimens in 1895-96. He was even awarded the University Medal for Clinical Surgery in the year 1894-95. He graduated with an MB 1897 and, unsurprisingly, with a Commendation. William would also attain an MD from the University in 1902 with a thesis titled ‘Aetiology of malaria’.

Following his distinguished University career, he entered the Indian Medical Service and arrived in India in October 1898. Lieutenant-Colonel William Glen Liston would eventually become responsible for elucidating the transmission of plague from rat to man, through the fleas of the rat. His paper on the subject, ‘Plague, rats and fleas’, was published in the Indian Medical Gazette in February 1905.

William Glen Liston died on the 18th of October 1950.
