Biography of Cunison Charles Finlator
Cunison Charles Finlator first matriculation 1898-99
Born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, on the 3rd November 1881, Cunison Charles Finaltor was the son of Thomas Finlator, a bank agent.
Cunison first matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1898-99. He signed up to study Medicine and in this first year of study, at only 16 years of age, he was studying subjects such as Zoology, Chemistry and even Junior Anatomy.
He attended at the University for five years and studied the subjects required to gain a medical degree; subjects like Physiology, Anatomy, Chemistry, Surgery, Materia Medica and Midwifery.
Cunison was a very good student and was in fact the medallist for Clinical Medicine, senior division, in the session 1902-03. He was also awarded a First Class Certificate in 1902 for Diseases of the Throat and Nose.
After graduating on the 21st July 1903 with an MB, Cunison went on to qualify with an MD (commended) in 1909 with the thesis title: ‘The prophylaxis of malaria in the Sudan’.
In 1909 Cunison also took the DPH at Victoria University, Manchester.
In 1907-8 he was the medical officer to the Sudan Plantations Syndicate at Zeidab. From 1911 onwards, however, Cunison Charles Finlator was the Medical Officer of Health for Clackmannanshire and his only break from the role was during WWI when he was a Specialist Sanitary Officer for the Western District, Scottish Command (1915-19).
Cunison Charles Finlator died on the 4th April 1940.
