Robert Inglis Binning graduated MB ChB from the University in 1907. He was born at Rangoon, Burma, modern day Yangon, Myanmar, son of John, an East India merchant.

Educated at the Glasgow Academy, Binning enrolled at the University in 1902, and over the course of five years took classes in Chemistry, Zoology, Anatomy, Physiology, Materia Medica, Pathology, Midwifery, and Practical Surgery. He graduated on 23 July 1907.

Binning worked as a resident assistant at Glasgow Royal Infirmary before the outbreak of the First World War, during which he served with the Indian Medical Service and was stationed at Port Blair, South Andaman Island, Bay of Bengal. Basra was made base of the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force in November 1914 by the 6th Poona Division. It was there where Captain Binning, Mentioned in Despatches, died of fever in the Persian Gulf on 16 August 1916, aged 30.

He was buried in grave V. J. 3 in the Basra War Cemetery. The 4000 headstones in the Basra War Cemetery were destroyed in 2013. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is committed to repairing the damage when it deems it is safe to do so. He is commemorated in the Rolls of Honour of Glasgow Royal Infirmary, the University of Glasgow, Glasgow Academy and at the Glasgow Necropolis.
