Biography of Lewis Robertson Sutherland
Lewis Robertson Sutherland graduated MB ChB from the University in 1890 and became Emeritus Professor of Pathology at the University of St Andrews.
Born at Gibraltar, son of Reverend Andrew Sutherland MA 1831, Sutherland enrolled at the University in 1880, aged 17 to study Medicine. Upon graduation, Sutherland studied in Frankfurt and Berlin, returning to Glasgow where he was resident physician and surgeon in the Western Infirmary. From 1891 he was Assistant to Professor Joseph Coats and demonstrator of pathology in the Western Infirmary as well as pathologist at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. He was the editor in the forth and fifth editions of Professor Coats' A Manual of Pathology.
In 1899 he was appointed Chair of Pathology at University College, Dundee, a position he held for 32 years. In 1932, he was conferred an honorary LLD by the University of St Andrews.
