Upton Scott 
Biography of Upton Scott
Upton Scott graduated MD from the University in 1753, and became the first President of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland.
Born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Scott was of Scottish descent and reeturned to Glasgow for his medical training. Scott travelled to Annapolis as personal physician to Horatio Sharpe and Sir Robert Eden, consecutive Governors of Maryland. As well as having his own practice at Annapolis, and serving as examiner general from 1761 to 1776, Scott was appointed clerk of the Upper House and of the Council from 1766 to 1768. He served as mayor of Annapolis from 1767 to 1768. During the American Revolution Scott retuned to Ireland, but returned to Annapolis therafter.
In 1799, aged 76, Scott together with other Maryland physicians founded the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of the State of Maryland and served as its first president.
In 1814, aged 90, Scott died and was buried at St Ann’s Church in Annapolis, the same year his nephew, Francis Scott Key penned the National Anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner.
