Biography of David Whiteford Orr
David Whiteford Orr (c.1861-1928) graduated MBCM from the University of Glasgow on 26th July 1883. He was born around 1861 in Dalry, Ayrshire, the son of Thomas Orr, who worked as a herbalist. He first enrolled to study at the University in the summer session of 1878, and embarked fully on his MBCM course in 1879.
During his first year at Glasgow, he studied classes in Natural History, Botany and Chemistry, followed by Anatomy and Physiology in his second. In his third year he studied Regional Anatomy, Materia Medica and Pharmacy and Pathology. In his fourth and final year, he studied Physic, Clinical Medicine, Clinical Surgery, Surgery, Midwifery, Forensic Medicine and Therapeutics.
In summer 1880, he was awarded a Second Class certificate for Materia Medica and Practical Pharmacy in the class of Matthew Charteris.
Following his time at the University, David Orr moved to Lindley, West Yorkshire; he is listed in the 1898 Medical Directory as a physician and surgeon practicing there. Orr also appears in local directories for the West Riding of Yorkshire, listed as a surgeon and medical officer from 1887 up until 1901. He worked as a public vaccinator for District One of Huddersfield Union, providing Poor Law healthcare. In addition to his medical work, David W. Orr owned a leather goods manufacturing business, David Whiteford & Co Ltd. He remained in Lindley until his death in 1928.
