Biography of Levi Myers
Levi Myers was the first Jewish medical graduate of the University of Glasgow, obtaining a MD in 1787. He was born in Georgetown, South Carolina in 1767.
Due to English universities requiring students to take a religious oath before embarking on their studies, many Jewish students obtained their education in Scotland as such an oath was not required. After qualifying, Myers returned to America and became the first Jewish doctor to belong to the Medical Society of South Carolina. He ran medical practises both Georgetown and Charleston. He died in 1822 when a hurricane struck his home South Carolina.
