Biography of Sir Henry George Lyons

Sir Henry George Lyons (1864-1944) was the first Lecturer in Geography at the University, 1909 to 1911 and became Director of the Science Museum.

Born in London, Lyons was educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich and joined the Royal Engineers. He had been elected to the Geological Society at the age of 18 and continued his research while serving abroad. He was a lecturer in Glasgow for only two years, before going to London to work at the Science Museum. He became a keeper in 1914 and Director in 1920.
