Biography of Sir Arthur Trueman
Sir Arthur Elijah Trueman (d 1956) was Professor of Geology from 1937 to 1946 and Dean of Faculties in 1945. He was awarded an LLD by the University in 1954.
Born in Nottingham, Trueman was a student teacher before studying Geology at University College, Nottingham, and graduating BSc, MSc and DSc. He became a lecturer at Cardiff in 1917, moving to the Universities of Swansea and then Bristol before his appointment to the Glasgow chair. He was a chairman of the Geological Survey Board and Deputy Chairman of the University Grants Committee from 1946 to 1953.
Trueman was President of the Geological Society of London from 1945 to 1947 and was awarded its Bigsby and Wollaston Medals for his scientific work. He was knighted in 1951.
