John Duncan Mackie
John Duncan Mackie (1887-1978) was Professor of Scottish History and Literature at the University from 1930 to 1957 and Dean of Faculties, 1940 to 1945 and 1961 to 1964. He was the author of The University of Glasgow, 1451-1951, published in 1954, and in 1957 was appointed Historiographer Royal in Scotland.
Mackie was the son of a journalist and was educated at Jesus College, Oxford, where he obtained a first-class degree in History. He was appointed Lecturer in History at the University of St Andrews in 1909. He served in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders during the First World War, when he was seriously wounded and was awarded the Military Cross. In 1926 he was appointed Professor of Modern History at Bedford College, University of London, and he was appointed to the Glasgow chair four years later. Among many influential publications, he wrote The Earlier Tudors 1485-1558 (1952) and the popular A History of Scotland (1964).
