Biography of George McKelvie
George McKelvie graduated from the University of Glasgow with an M.A. in 1886.
He was born on the 23rd March 1859 in County Tyrone, Ireland. His father, Alexander, was a warehouseman.
George first came to the University in 1880. His field of study was Theology, taking classes such as Divinity and Hebrew. He was a student for five years in total, finishing his studies in 1886. Whilst at University, he first lived at 18 Bridgeton Cross, before moving to 3 West Street, Calton, where he lived for the remainder of his University career.
After completing his studies, George became a member of the clergy. He was a Church of Scotland Chaplain in Bengal as well as a Minister of Church of Scotland Congregation at Port Louis, Mauritius. Furthermore, he was a preacher in Ceylon, as well as a chaplain to a Prisoner of War Camp during the Boer War. Finally, George McKelvie is mentioned in 'A Short History of the Presbyterian Church in Canada'.
He died in 1906, and was survived by a wife and four children who returned to Scotland.
