Biography of Colin McIsaac
Colin M'Isaac was born, likely in Canada West (now Ontario), in 1842. His matriculation entry for the 1857 Library Register lists his birthplace as Paisley, but subsequent entries specify Canada (1858) or Canada West (1859). His father, John M'Isaac, was a minister trained at the University of Glasgow, who served in Lochiel, in Glengarry County, Canada West. The M'Isaacs returned to Scotland in 1845.
In 1857, Colin M’Isaac first matriculated at the University of Glasgow, aged 15. M'Isaac continued to study at the university through 1862, and attended summer sessions in 1859, 1860 and 1861. M'Isaac then left the University, though his brother James Buchanan M'Isaac continued his studies. In 1867, Colin M'Isaac returned to the University of Glasgow to matriculate a final time. He graduated with an MA in 1868.
M’Isaac married Mary Janet Kirke (1849-1924), daughter of Rev. Robert Kirke of Dollar. After attaining his degree, M’Isaac emigrated to India, where he became headmaster of the Government Provincial School, Calicut (modern day Kozhikode, Kerala) in 1869. He held this post until his death on 12 July 1871.
