Biography of Dorothy Almar Lunt
Dorothy Lunt graduated Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1953. She was the first person to be awarded the Master of Dental Surgery by the University in 1961. Dr Lunt also obtained a PhD from the University in 1966.
Dorothy Lunt was born in Stirling but grew up in Alloa and attended Alloa Academy. She enrolled at the University in 1948 for the BDS course. The Dental School amalgamated with the University in 1947 and Dr Lunt was part of the second intake of BDS students.
In the final year of her BDS, Dorothy Lunt decided to follow a career in teaching and research rather than dental practice. Apart from a year spent in Manchester as an Assistant Lecturer at the start of her career, she spent the rest of her teaching career in Glasgow. She progressed from a Lecturer to a Senior Lecturer and, finally, Reader in Oral Biology.
Dorothy Lunt decided to combine her interest in archaeology with her research work for her Master of Dental Surgery. She was awarded the degree with commendation in 1961 for a thesis on The dentition of early Scottish races. The Master of Dental Surgery degree was later replaced by the Doctor of Dental Surgery. Dorothy Lunt converted her MDS to a DDS in 1980.
Dorothy Lunt was awarded a PhD in 1966 for a thesis entitled An odontometric study of mediaeval Danes. The photograph shows Dr Lunt in 1963 inspecting a skull at the Pathologisk-Anatomisk Institut in Copenhagen as part of the research for her PhD.
Following her PhD, Dr Lunt continued to research and publish. She built on the experience of her MDS and PhD studies and produced reports throughout her career on skeletal material from archaeological digs in Scotland. Dr Lunt also worked on Cypriot and Syrian archaelogical projects over a number of years.
Dr Lunt retired from teaching in 1987. She then became an Honorary Senior Research Fellow which allowed her to continue with research work until 2005. She was President of Glasgow Archaeological Society between 1991 and 1994.
