Gilbert Petgrave Johnson graduated from the University of Glasgow MBCM 1890 and MD 1894. Johnson became the Medical Officer for Stoke-on-Trent and the Potteries.

Gilbert was born on 19th October 1868 in Hanover, Lucea, Jamaica. He came to Scotland to study at the University of Glasgow and first matriculated in the summer session of 1886 aged 17, to study for a medical degree. Johnson was an excellent student and won a number of prizes throughout his studies, including four first-class certificates in subjects such as Anatomy and Clinical Medicine. He also won the John Hunter Medal in 1888 for Practical Physiology and was a class assistant for the class 'Institutes of Medicine' in 1889-90.

Johnson remained at the University, after graduating MBCM in 1890 with Commendation, to study for an MD. He achieved his MD in 1894 with a thesis titled: The Diagnosis of Small-Pox .

Johnson achieved a Diploma in Public Health from the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons, London, in 1893 and became the Senior Medical Officer at the City Hospital, Liverpool before becoming part-time Medical Officer of the Old Borough of Stoke-on-Trent in 1900. Dr Johnson became Medical Officer for Stoke-On-Trent and the Potteries in 1910 and devoted himself to the work of the public health department.

Johnson's professional research interests included: public health, tuberculosis, perinatal & child welfare, housing, smoke abatement, epidemiology, clean water and typhoid. Johnson was skilled at tracing epidemics to their source. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Society of Medical Officers of Health, on the Executive of the British Medical Association, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Stoke-On-Trent Branch of the National Association of Local Government Officers and was a member of the National Smoke Abatement League.

Dr Gilbert Petgrave Johnson died in 1926 in Staffordshire.
