Peter H Holmes (1942-) is a graduate of the University who became Assistant Lecturer in Veterinary Physiology in 1966 and was appointed Professor of Veterinary Physiology in 1995. He was Vice Principal from 1997 to 2006, and Pro Vice Principal from 2006 to 2008. He retired in June 2008 after 42 years of service and is now Emeritus Professor in Veterinary Physiology and chair of the Veterinary Fund Committee.

Born in East Yorkshire on 6th June 1942, Professor Holmes attended Beverley Grammar School. He first matriculated to study at the University of Glasgow Veterinary School in 1961 and qualified with a BVMS in 1966. After graduation he joined its Department of Veterinary Physiology where he obtained a PhD in 1969 for research on the pathophysiology of ovine fascioliasis. In 1970 he undertook a two year secondment to the Institute of Pathobiology at Addis Ababa University. This initial research on parasites and his early work in Ethiopia stimulated a lifelong commitment to veterinary research and education in Scotland and Africa.

His main field of research is the pathophysiology of parasitic diseases and he has over 200 publications on this topic. He has collaborated with a large number of international institutions and especially with those situated in Sub-Saharan Africa. Much of his research is interdisciplinary and encompasses physiology, nutrition, immunology and chemotherapy.

He has served on numerous national and international committees. He was a member of the Scottish Funding Council from 2003 to 2011 and chaired its research committee. He was chair of the Livestock Research Strategy Committee of the Overseas Development Administration (ODA) from 1992 to 1997, and founding chairman of the Programme Against African Trypanosomiasis (PAAT) from 1997 to 2002.

In 2007 Professor Holmes was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and an OBE for services to veterinary medicine and higher education. In 2009 he was awarded the French honour of Commandeur dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques for his work in promoting scientific collaboration between Scotland and France. He has honorary degrees from Strathclyde University and the University of Hull. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
