William Jones graduated MD from the University of Glasgow in 1818, following service as a surgeon at the Battle of Waterloo.
Born on the 12th of October 1782, Jones first served with the Army in November 1805 as a Hospital Mate. He likely would have completed an initial medical degree prior to this. Later that same month, he was positioned as Assistant Surgeon with the 95th Foot. In 1807, whilst serving in Buenos Aires in the Rio Plata Expedition, Jones was taken as a prisoner of war. Following this ordeal, he also served in the Peninsula from 1808 until 1814. By the time of Waterloo, Jones had been positioned as Surgeon with the 40th Foot, and this service is noted in his University of Glasgow student records. With the 40th Foot, he served in the USA and at the Battle of Waterloo.
His roll call is impressive, noting his presence at Coa (1810), Busaco (1810), Pombal (1811), Redinha (1811), Ciudad Rodrigo (1812) and Salamanca (1812) â€" to name but a few.
Almost immediately after Waterloo, Jones enrolled on an MD course at the University of Glasgow, from which he graduated in 1818. At the University, he took classes in Botany, Anatomy, Surgery, Materia Medica, Chemistry and Practice of Medicine. He also took additional classes in Anatomy and Chemistry in 1818, following his graduation. William Jones retired from military service in May 1831 and died on 8th August 1831 in Burton-on-Trent.
