Biography of Charles Martin Grant
Born in Albion Mills, Nova Scotia, in 1842, Charles Grant was the son of James Grant. Charles lists his father's occupation as both teacher and farmer.
Grant was part of a society of Nova Scotians in Glasgow; George Monro Grant was his older brother, and Daniel Miner Gordon was a friend. He first matriculated in 1859 at age 17 studying Arts, and graduated with an MA in Divinity in 1865. In 1859-60, Grant studied junior Latin, and Greek. The following year, he audited Latin, and attended classes in Greek, Logic, and Ethics. In the 1861-62 session, he studied Ethics, and junior Mathematics, and took classes in Physics in 1862-63.
In 1862-1863, Grant received a special prize in Physics for 'Experimental Investigations in the laboratory.'
Following his graduation, Grant returned to Nova Scotia, and spent two years as a minister in Halifax. From 1868-71, at the request of Norman McLeod, he served as a Missionary Professor in the General Assembly's College in Calcutta. In 1872, Grant returned to Scotland. He spent five years at St Mary's Church in Partick before taking a charge in Dundee, where he wrote a number of theological texts and died in 1916.
