William Mure of Caldwell
Biography of William Mure of Caldwell
William Mure of Caldwell (d 1831) was Rector of the University from 1793 to 1795.
Mure fought in the British Army in America during the American War of Independence, and was wounded, taken prisoner and exchanged. He was present at the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781. He returned to Scotland and was a Colonel of the Renfrew militia and Vice-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire.
Both Mure's father and his son were rectors of the University.
