John Grieve 
Biography of John Grieve
John Grieve graduated MA and MD from the University of Glasgow in 1777, and became court physician to two Emperors of Russia.
Born at Edinburgh in 1753, Grieve studied at Edinburgh prior to taking up medicine at Glasgow. He served in Russia as a military doctor in the Voronezh Division from 1778 - 1783, when he returned due to ill-health. During his time in Russia, Grieve pioneered British knowledge of koumiss (fermented mare's milk).
Returning to Edinburgh, Grieve was elected member of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (1784); was made an Edinburgh burgess and guild brother; and elected fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Grieve practiced medicine in London from 1786, becoming a fellow of the Royal Society, but returned to Russia in 1798 to serve as court physician to Emperor Paul I, and subsequently to Emperor Alexander I.
His medical practice, writing and correspondence while in Russia served to foster advances in medicine between Scotland and Russia.
