Lord Stanley
Edward Henry Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby (1826-1893) was Rector of the University from 1868 until 1871.
Born at the family seat in Lancashire, the son of a Conservative Prime Minister, the young Lord Stanley studied at Trinity College, Cambridge where he was a member of the undergraduate society, the Apostles. He was elected a Conservative MP in 1848 and served in government in a number of offices, including that of Foreign Secretary. In 1880 he announced his defection to the Liberal Party.
Stanley, who succeeded to the earldom in 1869, contested the 1868 rectorial election with the Liberal politician Robert Lowe. The election was tied and the University's Chancellor, the Duke of Montrose, gave his casting vote to Stanley. He was the last rector to be elected at the Old College in High Street, before the University moved to Gilmorehill in 1870.
