Biography of Ross Kemp
Ross Kemp (1964- ) was Rector of the University from 1999 until he resigned in November 2000.
Kemp is an actor who achieved fame for his award-winning role as Grant Mitchell in the continuing drama series Eastenders.
The other candidates in the 1999 rectorial election were Mrs Margaret Smith, grandmother of a University student; Anthony Connolly; Will Pickering, and the lawyer and University alumnus Ian Hamilton. The actor John Sessions withdrew before the election.
It was with regret that Kemp resigned in 2000, saying that "work pressures... have overtaken me and made it impossible for me to fulfil my obligations in the way I would have liked."
