Biography of John Don
John Don was born in Glasgow on 1 April 1868. His father was Andrew, a clothier. Before undertaking his medical degree, he completed an M.A between 1883 and 1887. In his first year he studied Latin and Greek, which he continued on in his second year along with Mathematics, where he was second in the Lower C class. In his third year he studied Literature, Mathematics and Logic. After this he studied Moral and Natural Philosophy, and in his final year he studied Anatomy and Chemistry. He graduated with an M.A ordinary degree in April 1887.
He then studied medicine and graduated with an MB CM with commendation in May 1892. He won the following prizes during his medical studies: First class merit certificate for Anatomy 1887-1888; 2nd class merit certificate for Institutes of Medicine, 1888; first in class and first class merit certificate for Anatomy, 1888; certificate of merit (third in class) in Development and Surgical Anatomy, 1888; second class merit certificate in Forensic Medicine, 1891; second class merit certificate in Diseases of Women, 1891; first class certificate (2nd equal in class) in Clinical Medicine, senior division, 1891.
According to Addison, W Innes, A roll of the Graduates of the University of Glasgow from 31 December 1727 â€" 31 December 1897, he was at Cornsay Colliery, County Durham. The Medical Directory of 1904 records him being in Steytlerville, Barroe Station, Cape Colony and the edition for 1914 records that he was in Vryburg, Cape Colony. His papers are held at the University of Glasgow Archives and Special Collections.
