Lord Curzon of Kedleston

George Nathaniel Curzon, Marquess Curzon of Kedleston (1859-1925), was University Rector from 1908 until 1911.

Born in Derbyshire, Curzon was educated at Eton and studied at Balliol College, Oxford. He became a Conservative MP in 1886 and travelled widely in central Asia, writing influential articles on the political situation there. In 1899 he was appointed Viceroy of India and created a Peer of Ireland. He returned to Britain in 1905 and became Chancellor of the University of Oxford. He served as Foreign Secretary 1919 to 1924, and was created Earl of Kedleston and Marquess Curzon of Kedleston in 1921.

Curzon's opponents in the 1908 rectorial election were the Chancellor of the Exchequer, David Lloyd George, and the socialist politician Keir Hardie. OH Mavor, Walter Elliot and other student supporters of Lloyd George introduced the University anthem Ygorra during the election campaign, but their candidate lost. Curzon then delayed travelling to Glasgow for his installation, resulting in mass meetings of students calling for his resignation. He was finally installed just nine months before the end of his term of office.
