Biography of William Mure of Caldwell

William Mure (1799-1860) was Rector of the University, 1847 to 1848, and Dean of Faculties, 1849 to 1851 and 1853 to 1857.

Born in Ayrshire, the son of William Mure of Caldwell (who was Rector of the University, 1793 to 1794), Caldwell studied at the University of Edinburgh and became a noted classical scholar. He succeeded to the Caldwell estates in 1831. He was Conservative MP for Renfrewshire from 1846 to 1855 and in 1859 he was Rector of the University of St Andrews.

Mure was put forward in 1847 as an opponent to the sitting Rector, Lord John Russell, because of discontent at Russell's apparent lack of interest in the office.
