Biography of Sir James Mackintosh of Kyllachy
Sir James Mackintosh of Kyllachy (1765-1832) was Rector of the University from 1822 to 1824.
Born in Aldourie on Loch Ness, Mackintosh studied at King's College Aberdeen and the University of Edinburgh before moving to London. He became a political commentator with strong Whig views. He was knighted in 1803 and spent eight years in India as a judge, returning to become MP for Nairn (elected in 1813) and, in 1819, Knaresborough. He was a prominent campaigner in the House of Commons for legal reform.
Mackintosh stood against the famous novelist Sir Walter Scott in the election for Rector in 1822. The vote was tied and the outgoing Rector, Francis Jeffrey, gave his casting vote to Mackintosh.
