Robert Hillman was born in London on the 15th of December 1910 and was the son of Arthur, an antiques dealer.
Robert first matriculated at the University of Glasgow at the age of 17, in 1928-9. He signed up to study Medicine and took subjects such as Zoology, Chemistry, and Botany. The next year, however, he decided he wanted to aim for an MA as well as a Medical degree (MB ChB) and so as well as studying Anatomy and Physiology, he studied Italian.
Robert spent eight years studying Medical and Arts subjects at the University and would take classes such as Surgery, Midwifery, and Gynaecology alongside the likes of English, History of Medicine, and Moral Philosophy. His strength lay in Medicine, however, and he finally graduated with an MB ChB on the 18th of April 1936.
Robert Hillman retuned to the University to study for an MD, which he received in 1947, submitting a thesis called: ‘An outline of malaria in Persia’.
