Biography of Hamilton Adye Louis Vetch
Captain Hamilton Adye Louis Vetch (1920-1944) of the Royal Engineers matriculated to study at the University in 1939.
Born in Devon, Vetch was educated at Chipping Camden Grammar School and Cheltenham College before matriculating to study Engineering at the University in 1939. He enlisted in the Grenadier Guards in 1940 and was subsequently awarded a commission in the Royal Engineers. He saw service in North Africa with the Armoured Division of the Corps, winning the Military Cross, and was involved in clearing beachheads after the landings in Sicily and Salerno. He continued with his unit to Monte Cassino, Rome and the River Po, and was reported missing in action near the River Merano on 5 September 1944.
Vetch's name is inscribed on the Cassino Memorial, the Cheltenham War Memorial and in the Church of St Philip and St James in Cheltenham.
