Biography of Finlay McDonald Urquhart
Finlay Urquhart
Major Finlay McDonald Urquhart of the Highland Light Infantry was born in China. He attended the High School of Glasgow and went on to the University, graduating MA in 1912. He served with the HLI in the Middle East during the First World War and then on the staff in India during the Afghan War, before retiring to the Regular Army Reserve of Officers.
Back in Scotland, Urquhart returned to the University and graduated LLB in 1924. He was a solicitor with Carruthers, Gemmill & McKillop at the same time as he worked as a lecturer in International Law at the University. He was one of the original residents of Maclay Hall and became Warden there in 1927.
Urquhart was a Captain in the Glasgow Highlanders, HLI, as a Reserve, and rejoined his regiment at the beginning of the war. He was killed in action in North Africa on 24 March 1943 and was mentioned in despatches, posthumously, for his "distinguished service."
A Memorial Service for Findlay Urquhart was held in the University Chapel on 21 November 1943.
