James Bonar 
Biography of James Bonar
The James Bonar Chair in Political Economy was founded in 1962 and named for the distinguished University graduate and political economist, James Bonar (1852-1941). It became the Bonar-Macfie Chair in 1990.
Born in Perthshire, Bonar graduated from the University in 1874, MA with First Class Honours in Mental Philosophy. He became a Snell Exhibitioner and in 1877 was awarded a first class degree in Greats. In 1881 he joined the Civil Service Commission and became a senior examiner. The University awarded him an LLD in 1887.
In 1907 Bonar was appointed Deputy Master of the Ottowa branch of the Royal Mint. He returned to Britain in 1919. A prolific author on Policital Economy, he was a founder of what became the Royal Economic Society and a president of the Economics section of the British Association.
