John Dewar Cormack
The Cormack Chair of Civil Engineering is named for John Dewar Cormack (1870-1935) Regius Professor of Civil Engineering and Mechanics at the University from 1913 until 1935.
Born in Dumbarton, Cormack graduated from the University in 1892 with a BSc in Engineering. He became a lecturer in electrical engineering at the Yorkshire College in Leeds and then worked as an assistant to Professor Archibald Barr at the University. He was appointed Professor of Mechanical Engineering at University College London in 1910.
In 1913 Cormack succeeded Barr as the Regius Professor at the University. Among many honours he was awarded the Chevalier of the Legion of Honour by the French Government and elected a President of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland. He was one of the founders of the Glasgow University Engineering Society.
