The photograph is part of a collection of ship portraits dating from the 1880s taken by James Adamson, a photographer from Rothesay on the Isle of Bute. His collection is one of the most comprehensive of sailing and steam ship photographs of the period. Most of the pictures were taken just after the ships were completed.
