The staff with sickle-shaped top functioned as a method of parrying spear attack. Smaller versions were also made as ceremonial dance sticks intended to be held horizontally by men.
Towards its top the staff is decorated with a minute snake's head with inset shell eyes; close to the base the shaft is carved into a seated, abstracted human figure in full relief.
