Hugh Mackenzie was a graduate of the University of Glasgow. He was born in Snizort, Isle of Skye, Inverness-Shire on 11th Nov 1916. His father, John Mackenzie, was a gardener. His home address was 5 Glenconon, Uig, Isle of Skye.

On the 5th of September 1934 he passed preliminary exams to enter the University of Glasgow. He received the Carnegie Trust Grant and a grant from the Inverness-Shire Education Authority. In his first year he lodged at 38 Carnarvon Street, Glasgow and in his second and third years he lived at 22 Boyd Street, Glasgow.

He took classes mostly in the Arts faculty with a view to pursue an MA. In his first year he took Latin, English and Celtic. In his second he took English, Celtic and Moral Philosophy. He received a second class certificate in Celtic in his second year. In his third year he took English and Geology. He graduated with an MA at the age of 21 on the 13th of November 1937.

After graduating he lived at 33 Boyd Street, Glasgow and worked as a teacher. He died on the 18th of November 1965.
