Biography of Hector Maclean

Hector Maclean was an Arts student at the University of Glasgow from 1912 to 1914. He was born in Lismore, New South Wales, son Charles, a shipwright (shipbuilder).

Maclean graduated BA, MA and MSc in Philosophy from the University of Otago, New Zealand. Having won a travelling scholarship in 1910, Maclean attended the United Free Church College in Glasgow, for further study the area of Theology. He enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1912, aged 27, taking classes in Aram and Hebrew under Professor William Barron Stevenson, Professor of Hebrew and Semitic Languages at the University from 1907 to 1937. Maclean also tutored at the Free Church College, and acted as assistant to Professor Stevenson from 1914 to 1915. In 1914 Maclean obtained a BD from the University of London.

Maclean returned to New Zealand in 1915, where he was ordained and appointed minister of Knox Church, Invercargill. During WWI, he enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (October 1916), and served on the Western Front with the 4th Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade. With the rank of sergeant, he was appointed chaplain to the forces in England in 1918.

After the War, Maclean returned to New Zealand and served at St Andrew's Church, Dunedin, from 1920. He returned to his interest in theological education and in 1927, Maclean was appointed to the chair of Old Testament studies at the Theological Hall of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria, Ormond College. He was then appointed Principal in 1942. He was also appointed Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria from 1943 to 1944. Co-founder of the Fellowship for Biblical Studies, in 1951 Maclean received an honorary DD from the University of Edinburgh.

Reverend Hector Maclean died on 27 May 1968.
