Macleod followed in his two older brother's (Donald Murdo Macleod and Malcolm Kenneth Macleod) footsteps attending the University in 1936, aged 18. Originally pursuing a BSc in Pure Science, Macleod switched to study Arts. While at the University he was the recipient of the Education Authority Grant from 1936-1938 and the Carnegie Trust Grant from 1936-1938. His studies were interrupted between 1938-1946, but returned to classes in 1946, graduating MA in 1947. Like both of his brothers, John went on to be a teacher in Dingwall.
