Biography of Janie Hamilton McIlroy

Janie Hamilton McIlroy attained numerous degrees at the University of Glasgow. She graduated MA in 1898, BSc in 1901, MB ChB 1904 and a DSc in 1911. Janie was born on the 3rd of March 1876 and she was the daughter of James McIIroy, a physician and was also the sister of graduate Dame Anne Louise McIIroy.

During her time at university, while she was studying to attain her MA, Janie took a variety of subjects including Latin and English. While studying for her BSc however, Janie studied Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, Physiology, Anatomy, Botany and Zoology. Janie also received a variety of prizes including two second class certificates in Advanced Practical Physiology and a first class certificate in Practical Pathology.

Special Collections at the University of Glasgow Library has a copy of her 1911 DSc thesis: The independence of the peripheral sensory neurone in view of the results of experimental section of the optic nerve in the rabbit . Janie later became a specialist in ophthalmology.
