James Miller Mackay Muir was born in Girvan, Ayrshire, on 13 July 1864, the son of William McDonald McGregor Muir, an artist.

Muir first matriculated at the University of Glasgow in the session 1884/85, aged 20. He studied for a degree in Medicine, and following the usual curriculum he passed all exams first time.

During his time at the University, he won a number of class prizes. In 1884/85 he won a second class certificate in Botany, and second class certificate in Chemistry; in 1885/86 he won a first class certificate in Institutes of Medicine and first class certificate in Practical Chemistry; and in 1888/89 won a first class certificate in Clinical Surgery.

Muir graduated MB CM on 25 July 1889.

After graduation Muir emigrated to Australia, working as a doctor in Woodend, Victoria, then Wynyard, Tasmania, where he was the local GP for over 30 years until his death in 1926.
