Robert Berry was a graduate of the University and an advocate who became Professor of Law from 1867 to 1887 and Dean of Faculties from 1888 to 1896. He was Senate's Assessor from 1880 to 1884 and 1889 to 1900.

Born in Tayport, Berry studied at Cambridge, graduating BA in 1848, and at the University, graduating MA in 1851. He was a Fellow of Trinity College from 1850 until 1858.

Berry was called to the English Bar in 1853 and admitted to the Scottish Bar ten years later. He was Secretary to the Royal Commission on the Scottish Universities of 1858 and 1876. In 1886 he was appointed Sheriff Principal of Lanarkshire, a position he held until his death in 1903.
