Surgeon Lieutenant Archibald Barr Aiton was born in Strathaven, Lanarkshire, and was educated at the University, graduating BSc in 1938 and MB, ChB in 1941. He joined the house staff at Stobhill Hospital before becoming the ship's surgeon on the destroyer HMS Martin.

HMS Martin was commissioned in April 1942 and sailed in a convoy to Russia in May. During that voyage she rescued many of the crew from another destroyer, HMS Punjabi. She was subsequently sent to the Mediterranean.

Aiton was one of 161 officers and men who died when HMS Martin was torpedoed and sunk off Algiers on 10 November 1942.
